Sometimes you just fall in love with a place, don’t you? A spot where you would prefer to stay a little longer or come back. Spending a night in a yurt in the Netherlands is definitely an experience I want to repeat. Yurt camping or glamping seems to become more and more popular. Let me show you why.
Yurt? Spending the night in a… what?
A yurt is a spacious, domed tent that itinerant nomads in Mongolia, for example, like to use. The frame is made of wood with slats, sticks, and a kind of wheel on the roof. A large canvas covers the entire thing. Such a yurt is undoubtedly fully equipped in the Netherlands because it is often used as a holiday home. Via Campspace, I end up at the yurt of Gemma and her husband in Hoogmade (this one).
Welcome to the yurt in Hoogmade
A proud hostess welcomes me to her property. The yurt is located on a fenced piece of land, entailing the orchard, bordering water, and overlooking the horse meadow. I enter a relaxed and quiet haven less than half an hour’s drive from Amsterdam. I visit the yurt in winter and spring, and the garden is beautiful at both times. In February, Gemma allows me to pick daffodils; in the spring, trees and plants slowly turn green, and the water lilies bloom. The pears, apples, cherries, and plums on the tree have yet to ripen.
When Gemma shows me around, I notice that this is a very luxurious yurt. Television, wi-fi, cooking facilities, an electric heater, a dining table, two relaxing chairs, and a large bed. With all these facilities, it is wonderful to get away from the daily grind here, even in wintertime. You can barbecue in the garden and enjoy the animals when the weather is nice. The horses are in front of the yurt, and now and then, a pair of swans with little ones swims by, the coots are busy, and the geese fly over.
Luxurious overnight stay in a yurt
Let’s talk about that bed, huh? It’s an adjustable bed. Put your feet up or read a book upright in bed? For sure! Next to the yurt is a small building with a toilet and shower – made by Gemma’s husband. A lovely little extra: some fresh eggs and a bottle of fruit wine are waiting for me. The cupboard also contains some local products, such as mustard and cheese, and a piggy bank to pay your dept.
Peaceful yurt glamping
Hoogmade is close to Leiden, but I must admit that I don’t leave the orchard. Well, to walk the dog. But above all, I want to enjoy the space and tranquility. Occasionally, I hear the highway, depending on how the wind blows. The construction company at the front of the site is sometimes a bit busy with traffic, but they will soon leave this location. Then it gets even quieter, Gemma happily sighs. Now and then, some residents walk and drive by. They are greeted (or chased away) with barking by my dog, but luckily the yard is fully fenced. And my dog is instantly in love with Gemma, who has dogs of her own.
I find staying in the yurt very relaxing. Maybe I’ll come again in the summer or fall to tick off all the seasons? Unless you beat me to it, of course – make a reservation now.

Is Gemma’s yurt fully booked? Don’t panic; there are plenty of other options. You can also sleep in a yurt in Nigtevegt or Nieuwleusen via Campspace. And Booking also has nice options for an overnight stay in a yurt. For example in Reutum, Schagen or Liempde.
