Latest update: 15 April 2024

Mallorca is the biggest island in the Balearics. It’s a long-loved holiday destination, offering excellent beaches and many opportunities to explore the island by foot, car, or bicycle. So to get the holiday anticipation started, here’s an extensive list of travel tips for what to do in Mallorca.

Things to do in Mallorca – 25 tips!

Before going to Mallorca, I had no idea how versatile the island is. Beach towns and mountain villages. Vineyards and olive groves. Football games and horse racing. There really is a lot to do in Mallorca. Check out the 25 Mallorca tips.

Tip 1 – Visit a fancy beach club in Portal Nous

Although I’m not the biggest fan of the Portal Nous area, some good beach clubs can be found here. I like the UM Beach House: it doesn’t have beach access, but a nice swimming pool will definitely cool you off on a hot day. UM Beach House also serves excellent food. And while you’re at it, why not check out if you like Puerto Portals and Portal Nous?

Tip 2 – Visit the Els Calderes estate and museum

The Els Calderes estate and museum offer a lovely little excursion for a few hours. There is plenty to see inside the mansion (from typewriters to an in-house chapel), and you can wander through the garden to meet the animals.

Tip 3 – Learn about Mallorca’s salt flats

Exploring the salt flats is a fun and educational thing to do in Mallorca. Salt is produced in Ses Salines. If you’re curious about how that works, you can join a tour at Salines des Trenc. You’ll see the salt flats, learn how salt is harvested, and, of course, you have a chance to buy some Mallorcan salt.

Tip 4 – Explore Sóller and Port de Sóller

You can either drive to the northwest towns of Sóller and Port de Sóller, or you can catch a train from Palma de Mallorca. The train ride is one of the tourist highlights of Mallorca. It’ll take you to Sóller so that you can first explore the town for a bit and then head off to Port de Sóller for some beach time.

Tip 5 – Combine a beach day in C’an Picafort with some sights

C’an Picafort is a popular seaside resort and offers many bars and restaurants near the beach. If you’re looking for something to do in Mallorca between a nap on the beach and a sangria in the bar, there are some sights to quickly tick off your list and some more daring activities too. Cliff jumping anyone?

Tip 6 – Get your pictures at Mirador Es Colomer

The Es Colomer viewpoint is an absolute must-see while you’re in Mallorca. It allows you perfect views of giant cliffs while safely behind the railings. Those are definitely necessary as the wind is almost always strong. The viewpoint is just the start of the Formentor peninsula, so there’s more to explore in the area.

Tip 7 – Visit Sineu’s market

Arguably the best market to visit in Mallorca is the one in Sineu. Visiting the market is one of the main things to do in Mallorca. The Wednesday market has already existed for 700 years, and it offers a wide variety of goods: from food to knick-knacks and livestock. Sineu itself is a lovely town to visit. It has few sights but enough cute little alleys to explore. And Sineu has the best coffee on the island!

Tip 8 – Visit a glassblowing workshop

Glassblowing is quite popular in Mallorca. You’ll see quite a few shops offering glass products in Palma de Mallorca. It might be a bit tricky to take glasses or chandeliers home, so why not take a glass memory home? You can visit the Vidrio Gordiola glass workshop for free. It’s near Montuïri.

Tip 9 – Discover the Ses Salines area

There are plenty of pretty beaches to be found in the south of Mallorca, but the area also offers some fun things to do and nice places to eat. Ses Salines isn’t a big town at all, but you will have to do some driving to get to all the sights and restaurants.

Tip 10 – Buy cowboy boots in Santanyí

You won’t find cowboys in the golden-white town of Santanyí, but you will find one of the famous Toni Mora shops. Buy a pair of handmade cowboy boots, or simply explore the town. Santanyí is home to many artists and therefore has an artsy, easygoing vibe. There most certainly is an outdoor cafe you’ll like as Santanyí offers many lovely options.

Tip 11 – Get away from the tourists in Montuïri

Montuïri is not exactly a popular village. It’s not the prettiest and it doesn’t offer a lot of entertainment. But I still love it. I lived in Montuïri for two months and enjoyed that it’s a town for Mallorcans, not for tourists. So if you want to escape the crowds a bit, you might like Montuïri too.

Tip 12 – Go wine tasting

A LOT of wine is produced in Mallorca. Who knew, right? Wine tastings are always a fun thing to do. Several wineries in Mallorca offer wine tastings or wine tours. The larger wineries have pretty professional tours; at the smaller ones, you get a more private experience. Also be sure to check out the local wines in the supermarket (to organize your own wine tasting 😉).

Tip 13 – Visit the sculpture garden of Museo Sa Bassa Blanca

A golden Ken and Barbie, a giant octopus, and a mini Stonehenge. It’s all to be found in the colorful sculpture garden of the Museo Sa Bassa Blanca. Even if you’re not into art and museums, I still think you’l have a wonderful time exploring here.

Tip 14 – Wander the most beautiful village of Mallorca

Valldemossa is a gorgeous mountain village with many small alleys and narrow streets to explore. The houses are beautifully decorated with flowers and plants, and Saint Catalina protects the streets through a collection of tiles. There are a few sights in town, but also wonderful hiking opportunities in the area. And what about a visit to an olive grove?

Tip 15 – Lunch at 5illes PORT in Sant Jordi

You have to eat anyway, so why not at 5illes Port in Colonia de Sant Jordi? You won’t regret it. Making a reservation is a good idea if you want to be sure of a spot. 5illes serves dishes to share. The waiter advises us to choose 5 or 6 dishes for four people. But we can’t choose! So we order seven, and everything is so good except for the lemon pie (which is too sweet and too simple compared to the other dishes). The service is attentive and helps you in the decision-making process; I always like that.

Tip 16 – Spend some time in Palma de Mallorca

Definitely spend a day in Mallorca’s capital city. It’s a lively city with plenty of shops, restaurants, and sights. The cathedral is absolutely stunning, so be sure to check it out.

Tip 17 – Visit underground caves

Near Manacor, you’ll find the Caves of Drach and the Caves of Hams. They are underground caves with stalagmites and stalactites, all illuminated. In the Drach Caves, you’ll even see a short classical concert.

Tip 18 – Take a day trip to Alcúdia

Alcúdia has over 10 kilometers of sandy beach. But if that isn’t attractive enough, Alcúdia makes for an excellent day trip if you combine the beach with a visit to the old town and the nearby sculpture garden. In addition, it’s a starting point for many boat trips – if you have the time, definitely plan a boat trip too!.

Tip 19 – Go hiking in Mallorca (short hikes)

There’s much more to do in Mallorca than just visiting beaches. The island has beautiful areas to discover inland as well. So set out for a hike. I’ve done quite a few short ones on the island, and they are all very rewarding.

Tip 20 – Be like Rafa: visit the Rafael Nadal Museum Experience

The Rafa Nadal Museum Experience is 80% experience, 20% museum. It has many sport simulations, a small selection of athletes’ attributes on display, and a huge collection of tennis cups won by Rafael. I think especially older kids will enjoy this one.

Tip 21 – Eat out in Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca is home to many, many restaurants and cafés. It’s impossible to try them all in just one holiday, so you’ll have to pick and choose!

Tip 22 – A day trip to Artà and Capdepera

The two towns are only a 15-minute drive away from each other, so you can easily combine Artà and Capdepera in a day trip – and still have time to go to the beach afterward. Both towns have amazing fortifications: a castle and a church.

Tip 23 – Go to a football match of RCD Mallorca

If you’re into soccer, browse through the playing schedule of Real Club Deportivo Mallorca. Their stadium is in Palma de Mallorca, and in the 21/22 season, they play in the highest level of the Spanish league.

Buy your tickets here.

Tip 24 – Place a bet on horse racing

Mallorca has several racecourses where you can see horses race. Horse racing is quite popular on the island. You can enter the racecourse in Manacor for free, I’m not sure about the others. It’s mainly the local people that come to the tracks, but you’re more than welcome to have a peek.

Tip 25 – Ridiculously good food at DaiCa

Do you have something to celebrate? Or if you have nothing to celebrate but simply want ridiculously good food, then go to restaurant DaiCa in Llubí. The plates look chic, but the operation is by no means stiff. They are very friendly and explain all dishes in detail. The owners (the chef and the host) have both worked in several Michelin-star restaurants, and you can tell by all the attention to detail.

You cannot choose individual dishes but select a preset menu when making your reservation. I go for the extensive menu, and it is delicious. I find many flavors of Mallorca on my plate: local capers, figs, honey, and more. Oddly enough, they don’t have a wine pairing menu, but there are plenty of options on the wine list.

Make a reservation in advance through the website.
