More nature and fewer people. That is what immediately stands out when you get off the ferry from Malta to Gozo. And that is quite a relief after the hustle and bustle of the main island of Malta. So a relaxing trip to Gozo should definitely be on your Malta to-do list!

Is one day enough for Gozo?

Gozo is only 15 kilometers long by 7 kilometers wide. And yet, it is too big to discover the whole island in one day. Because in addition to the tips in this blog, you can also visit the salt pans, the Ġgantija Temples, and much more. So you can easily spend the night in Gozo to have more time to relax and explore. Some people even stay for a week to go on some beautiful hikes. With a day trip, you simply have to make choices. That’s just the way it is. 😉

Wander through the capital Victoria

The streets in the capital Victoria invite you to explore. Gozo’s narrowest street is also in the town. But Victoria is small anyway, so you’ll cover the city quickly. Then choose a nice cafe for lunch near the St George Basilica (Google Maps location) or get a coffee at Victoria Central (Google Maps location).

Citadel of Victoria

Calculate some extra time to visit the Citadel. A citadel is actually a fortified city, so it’s pretty large. You will find several museums (cathedral museum, folklore museum, archaeological museum, and more), and make sure to walk along the outer fortress wall. What a view!

Wine tasting at Tal-Massar Winery

The proud owners of the Tal-Massar Winery in Gozo are more than happy to introduce you to their award-winning wines. In the inland of Gozo, the vineyard is located high on a hill so the grapes can enjoy the view. The wine tasting starts with an explanation of the vineyard, the soil, and the production process. You can then taste four wines and one port. Luckily you get some snacks with it! If you’re keen on a tasting, please email the owners to make an appointment. Here you will find more information.

Gozo’s Blue Hole and Azure Window

Uhm, well… the Azure Window is no more. It was a hole in the rock formation, shaped like a window. But the ‘roof’ collapsed into the sea in 2017. That’s also a pity for the Game of Thrones fans because you saw this location in the series: the wedding party of Daenerys and Khal Drogo took place here.

Yet people still like to come and take a look. Just because the sea hits the rocks so beautifully and the Blue Hole is also here. From the cliff, you look on top of the Blue Hole. If the sea is calm enough, you can snorkel and dive in it.

On the other side of the Blue Hole is the Inland Sea, behind the little chapel. It is an inland sea with calm, clear water, and fishermen’s houses. Perfect for paddling or taking a swim.

Unique tours to and in Gozo

You can easily visit Gozo on your own, but there are also a few excellent tours that you can do. That way, you don’t have to plan anything yourself – which can sometimes be very chill. For example, you can discover the island by GoCar or Quad. Or let yourself be driven around in a jeep or tuk-tuk.

How to get to Gozo

From Malta, you can take the ferry to Gozo. The Gozo Channel ferry takes about 25 minutes. It has a small cafeteria and ample seating space. You can make the crossing by car if you want. Mind you: you buy your ticket in Gozo. You will not be asked for your ticket on the way there. That is not necessary because you will eventually have to go back. Or otherwise, stay on Gozo for the rest of your life. The current prices can be found here.

If you don’t want to drive to the ferry, you can opt for the fast ferry from Valletta. The crossing takes about 45 minutes, and you can buy a one-way or return ticket. Maybe getting on the hop-on hop-off bus afterward and discovering the island is handy?
