Snorkeling with turtles, swimming with whale sharks and discovering Mayan cities in the jungle. Mexico is huge and incredibly diverse. From the beaches of the Riviera Maya and colorful Mérida to the lagoon of Bacalar and the waterfalls near Palenque.

💰CurrencyThe Mexican peso (MXN). In October 2026, €1 got you about 20.7 pesos and $1 about 18.4, but the rate changes fast. You can pay by card in most places, but you’ll need cash for small eateries, markets and colectivos. Use ATMs inside banks or malls when you can.
🗣️LanguageSpanish. In tourist hubs like Cancún and Tulum, you’ll get by fine in English, but elsewhere a few words of Spanish really help. In rural areas, many people also speak an Indigenous language, such as Maya.
⛪ReligionMore than three quarters of Mexicans are Catholic. You’ll see the Virgin of Guadalupe everywhere. Visiting a church? Keep your shoulders covered.
🕒Time zoneMexico has several time zones and no daylight saving time. Mexico City, Yucatán and Chiapas are on UTC-6, and Cancún and the rest of Quintana Roo on UTC-5. That puts Cancún on the same time as New York in winter, and 1 hour behind it in summer. Amsterdam is 6 to 8 hours ahead, depending on the season and region.
🛂VisaTravelers from the US, Canada, the UK, the EU and many other countries can stay up to 180 days without a visa. Your passport must be valid for your entire stay. Flying out of Quintana Roo, for example from Cancún? Pay the Visitax tourist tax online before you leave.
☀️Best time to goNovember through April, the dry season. From May through October, it’s hotter and rainier, and hurricane season runs from June through November.
🔌Power outletsMexico uses US-style outlets (127V), so US plugs fit. Coming from Europe? Bring an adapter and check that your devices handle the lower voltage.
🚗TrafficMexico drives on the right. Watch out for topes (speed bumps), and avoid driving after dark. No car? The comfortable ADO buses get you almost everywhere. Also check your government’s travel advice, as a few regions are best avoided.
