Hamburg is bursting with lovely breakfast places and coffee shops. You can go to most of them all day for coffee, breakfast, brunch, or lunch. These are my favorite breakfast spots in Hamburg.

Breakfast tip 1: Rain Cafeteria (Altona)

The Altona district is full of nice cafes and restaurants. Rain Cafeteria is one of them. You can have an excellent relaxed, good breakfast here. Pancakes, bowls, poached egg: plenty of choice! And the people behind the bar know how to make good coffee with latte art. There are a few spots outside, but there is quite a lot of space inside. By the way, you’ll feel very comfortable having breakfast here alone and working on your laptop while you wait.

Breakfast tip 2: Zuckermonarchy (St. Pauli)

The name suggests it: everything is sugar-sweet. There are paintings with romantic texts, the crockery is sweet pink, and the pastries are very sweet. At Zuckermonarchie, you come for a sugar rush: a cup of coffee and an eye-catching pastry. If you want breakfast, you must go on weekends and book in advance. You will get sandwiches, a croissant, cheese, meats, a boiled egg and, of course, a cake. Zuckermonarchie is on a side street of the famous Reeperbahn.

Breakfast tip 3: Moraba (St. Pauli)

Moraba in the St. Pauli district is a good choice for a simple, affordable breakfast. Moraba has twelve breakfast options, so there should be something for you. The coffee is good, and this is a lovely place, especially in good weather. The decor inside is nothing special. But the wooden tables on the street are great in the sun. Unfortunately, the facade of this breakfast spot has been sprayed with ugly graffiti tags. Only the chalkboards betray that there is something here. Otherwise, you would walk right past it.

Tip! Also bring some cash. In many places in Hamburg, you cannot use a debit card.

Breakfast tip 4: Nasch (Gangeviertel)

At the Gangeviertel, there is a tiny shop called Nush. The menu is limited: some biscuits, quiche, and a few sandwiches. So if you want a full, extensive breakfast, this is not the right place. Nasch is more for having a cup of coffee with something on the side, so a small breakfast. There is a different lunch dish every day. The setting is a bit alternative, as is the neighborhood. Be sure to go to the toilet for a unique spectacle with Barbie dolls.

Ontbijttip 5: Kraweel (St. Pauli)

Kraweel has been very popular in St. Pauli for a few years now. This breakfast spot has nice outdoor and unique seating areas inside. It is a colorful collection of vintage furniture. You can also swing by for a cup of coffee or lunch. As long as you’re not in a hurry: making a cup of coffee seemingly takes forever, and you also have to wait for your breakfast. But it’s worth the wait!

Breakfast tip 6: Gretchen’s Villa (St. Pauli)

It’s a bit cramped inside, but the delicious cakes and breakfasts more than makeup for it. Gretchen’s Villa is lovingly decorated, and your pastry is served on saucers your grandmother used to have. All cakes are homemade, and there are vegan and gluten-free options. Service is fast and attentive. On sunny days there is also enough space on the terrace. That’s good because Gretchen’s Villa is popular and fills up quickly.

Breakfast tip 7: NENI (HafenCity)

The NENI restaurant is in the 25Hours Hotel Altes HafenAmt and is an absolute must, even if you don’t sleep here. The breakfast is buffet style and very extensive. A chef makes your eggs just the way you want them. There are also Israeli-inspired options, such as hummus and baba ganoush. In addition, you can order delicious cappuccinos from the service staff (also included). Bonus: unlimited bubbles.

Breakfast tip 8: Fish market (Altona)

Actually, this is not a good breakfast tip at all. I think the brunch at the fish market on Sunday is a big rip-off. For over 20 euros, you can use the buffet with food you get for breakfast in any average hotel. Bread, cheese, cold cuts, fried egg, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, salmon, herring, rollmops, and things like that. You can also have a scoop of ice cream and chocolate mousse. Tea and black coffee are included in the price. Orange juice from a paper box costs € 2.50. I don’t find the service helpful (I ask a question to someone, and he shrugs his shoulders and keeps walking), and you are put at the table with other people. That would be fine if there would be space for it. But I have to elbow fight with my neighbor. I really don’t like it here. So, be sure to visit the fish market on Sunday morning, but go for breakfast somewhere else in Hamburg!

Breakfast tip 9: Liebes Bisschen (Altona)

Liebes Bisschen is an excellent place for breakfast and just as fun and delicious as cakes and tarts. Are you hungry enough to end your breakfast with a cheerful cupcake or piece of cake? During the weekend, it fills up very quickly here, but during the week, there is always a spot for you. The interior is modern, and it is especially very spacious.

Breakfast tip 10: Copenhagen Coffee Lab St. Pauli

In need of caffeine? You’re in the right place at Copenhagen Coffee Lab: with their coffee, you’ll be awake for the next few hours. And, of course, you can try all kinds of Danish baked goods. Tip: try the cardamom bun. Tastes exactly like in Denmark! The Copenhagen Coffe Lab is in the Rindermarkthalle. That is a market hall full of eateries – mainly for in the evening, but you can also go there for a quick breakfast. Not suitable if you are starving.

Ontbijttip 11: EM Breakfast Club

With a name like that, having breakfast is a sure bet. At the EM Breakfast Club, you can enjoy breakfast all day. You will find typical breakfast dishes on the menu, but there is also sufficient variation for later in the day. The portions are large, and the service is fast. The terrace is immediately full as soon as the weather permits. In fact, you should go inside anyway, if only with the excuse to go to the toilet, because the decor is very Instagrammable.

Additional breakfast or snack tip: Franzbrötchen

Whatever you do, get a Franzbrötchen during your visit to Hamburg. This is a typical sandwich from Hamburg. It is sweet and sticky and tastes like cinnamon. You can get it at almost any bakery.
