Where do you go for a good cup of coffee in Ostrava, Czech Republic? There are many coffee cafes in the city but of very variable quality. I tested seven for you! So check out the best coffee at the nicest coffee cafes – and there are a few you can skip too.

Coffee culture in Ostrava?

Auch, after Brno, Ostrava is a bit of a shock. Brno has a lively coffee culture, and I get a good quality cup at just about every coffee shop I walk into. But in Ostrava… it’s a little disappointing. Not that there’s no offer, there are a lot of coffee cafés in Ostrava. But a good cup of coffee seems pretty hard to find. So am I really making the wrong choices, or is the coffee quality just not so good in Ostrava? .

I even drink cappuccino, which, in theory, already obscures much of the coffee taste. But unfortunately, it doesn’t mask the quality. So I decide to investigate. Where can I get a good coffee in Ostrava? I’ve tested seven coffee cafés for you, including some not-so-good ones. But now you can avoid them – you’re welcome. 😉

Playlist while reading? Sure thing. Here you go.

Croissant House in Ostrava

I really like the concept of Croissant House. They make filled and topped croissants with fruit, chocolate, and other sweets, and they serve coffee, of course. Weak coffee, and unfortunately, the croissants don’t make up for the mediocre coffee. I go for the pistachio one because I liked it so much in Tuscany, but what a terrible buy. The croissant tastes chemically and way too sweet. The filling is too thick, and the structure of the croissant is not very fluffy like a French croissant. Maybe the other filling and topping options are better, but you still have that compact structure. So, feel free to skip Croissant House.

Bolt Tower Cafe in Ostrava

In the Bolt Tower Cafe, you come for the view over the industrial complex Dolní Vítkovice. The coffee cafe is located at the top of the tower. The coffee is drinkable, but that’s about it. And because of a peanut intolerance, I can’t taste a single cake from the display case, but according to my fellow coffee lovers, I was lucky I couldn’t. Quite dry and tasteless. Such a shame because this is a really lovely spot. Maybe order a coke then?

Tip! Looking for fun things to do? Here are my top tips for Ostrava.

Black Tree Cafe in Ostrava

The Black Tree Cafe is quite a popular coffee cafe. Early in the morning, people have already come to get a coffee, and in the afternoon, chances are you’ll have to wait for a table. So that happens to me, and maybe that’s why my expectations of Black Tree Cafe are a bit too high. I find it a somewhat weak cappuccino, a bit watery even. The reviews on Google, however, are way more enthusiastic, so maybe you should give this coffee bar a chance.

Ostravanka Coffee Shop in Ostrava

Oops, I made a mistake here! I order a chai latte instead of a cappuccino. On my test route, I’m so high on caffeine by the time I arrive at the Ostravanka Coffee Shop. So uhm, if the coffee is of the same quality as the chai latte, you can easily go here! It’s a small coffee shop with a bit of disjointed decor but some nice elements. Not super atmospheric, but fine for a short coffee stop.

CØKAFE Centrum in Ostrava

The CØKAFE Centrum is a friendly, light coffee café that invites you to linger a little longer and order another coffee. The ceiling is full of striking lamps, and the wide windowsill is full of plants. CØKAFE is a chain of coffee cafes. There are five in Ostrava, and I visit the ‘center’ branch. The cappuccino is just fine, the milk could have been more frothy and fuller, but the taste is okay. The service is friendly and helpful, and I secretly find it a relief that some alternative indie rock is blaring from the speakers. That gives this coffee shop just that little bit of extra character.

Shothouse in Ostrava

We have now ended up at the better coffee cafes in Ostrava. Finally, right?! Shothouse is a cool place by day for coffee and in the evening for gin and tonics. It is nicely decorated with a lot of black, friendly and clean and a bit industrial – which fits well with the city’s character. The coffee is prepared with care, which you can taste. I get a nice cappuccino with a tasty, strong coffee. Modern cup and saucer, good music in the background… maybe come back tonight for that gin and tonic?! I’m pretty sure it’ll be good.

PetPunk in Ostrava

Shothouse and PetPunk are clearly my favorite coffee cafes in Ostrava, without a doubt. PetPunk is a quirky coffee cafe, a bit hip alternative. There is a wallpaper of animal emojis on the wall, and there are all kinds of trinkets on the shelf. If you want, you can also get detailed advice about the blends and preparation. My cappuccino has a delicious taste, nice and strong. There are all kinds of homemade cakes and cookies on display, from cheesecake to typical Czech sweets.
